Requirements

Why you are required to have your portable appliances and leads inspected and tested:

Regulations and Standards

  • (A) It is law in New Zealand that all portable electrical including leads in commercial premises are inspected and tested at prescribed intervals for different environments.
  • NZ STD 3760 (2010) ‘in service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment’ Details the methodology for carrying out the testing and tagging process and prescribes the intervals required between testing and inspections of electrical equipment in different environments.
  • NZ STD 3012 (2003) ‘Electrical installations – construction and demolition sites’ Details the inspection requirement for electrical equipment on construction and demolition sites.
  • (B) Regulations 25(sect D) and (sect 2) of the Electrical Safety Regulations 2010 make it a legal requirement in NZ to abide by NZS 3012 and NZS 3760.

Enforcement

Workplace NZ inspectors are routinely inspecting sites. Fines will be applied to owners of equipment where evidence that electrical equipment has been inspected and tested at the prescribed intervals is not forthcoming.
